Wolfram alpha - the next big thing?

Rumor has it http://www.wolframalpha.com/ will beat Google as the next generation search engine... it's hard to believe... but only 10 years ago it was hard to believe Google would become what it is now...

So what is wolframalpha?

Stephan Wolfram, a math genius from England is trying to "make sense of the web"; to make the long (and extremely scientific) story short wolframalpha.com will answer your questions.

When you type "Which is the tallest building in China?" into Google you will get the list of about 377,000 web pages and the first of them is supposed (and usually is) the most relevant one.

If you type the same question into wolframalpha you may get only one line: "Shanghai's World Financial Center is the tallest building in China".

Wolframalpha will be launched sometime in May of 2009 so very soon we will have a chance to test how this "miracle" works... I would not hold my breath though; indexing and ranking zillions of pages is one thing, making sense of such vast and diverse material is something completely different...

We'll see...
