Air and water pollution in China may pose a serious health risk to travellers; while the effects of water pollution can be lessened by drinking bottled water sometimes it is hard to deal with extreme air pollution. Beijing and urban areas of central China can be heavily polluted.

“According to the People's Republic of China's own evaluation, two-thirds of the 338 cities for which air-quality data are available are considered polluted—two-thirds of them moderately or severely so. Respiratory, Cancer and heart diseases related to air pollution are the leading cause of death in China.”

If you suffer from respiratory or cardio-vascular illnesses please plan your trip carefully because you may which to choose visiting mountains and less polluted cities as opposed to mega polluted tourist hot-spots such as Beijing and Xi’an.

Also don’t forget to buy travel insurance policy just in case things go wrong and carrying medications from your own country is not a bad idea.
