Zhao Jiping can be rightly considered as China's John Williams. Having made his reputation scoring some of the most popular arthouse films from China's Fifth Generation Filmmakers (including "To Live", "Ju Dou", "Farewell My Concubine", and "Raise The Red Lantern", Zhao achieved international recognition following the release of the CD "Electric Shadows" (2000). The present recording is a suite compiled from the incidental music Zhao composed for the popular historic drama "Qiao's Grand Courtyard." Stylistically, think Morricone at his sweetest, with a Chinese flavor. The suite has become quite popular in China and is frequently programmed on concerts.

From the Composer's website:Born into an artistic family, Zhao Jiping graduated from the Composition Department of the Xi’an Conservatory of music. Later he entered the Central Conservatory of Music for further studies. He has engaged in music composition ever since the 1970s until today. He has served successively as the Vice Dean of the Shaanxi Local Operas Research Institute, Dean of the Shaanxi Musical Theatre, and representative of the 15th National Congress of the CPC. Presently he works as Chairman of the Association of Literature and Art Workers of Shaanxi Province, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Musicians Association, Chairman of the Shaanxi Musicians Association, Chairman of the China Film Music Association, a member of the standing committee of the Shaanxi Political Consultative conference, and a representative of the 11th National People’s Congress.

From 1984 until today, he has composed music for over 50 films and hundreds of TV series (episodes). He won twice the Best Composition Award in the Golden Rooster Film Awards, four times the TV Golden Eagle Award, one Flying Goddess Award, and one 20th Century Chinese Classic Works Award. In 1995, he was the only representative from Asia who was invited to the 2nd International Film Music Festival in Switzerland. The United States, Britain and France even jointly made a biographic documentary of him named Musician Zhao Jiping. In 2005, he received Contemporary Chinese Film Music Special Achievement Award during the campaign of One Hundred Years of Chinese Films. In the same year, he received the China Golden Disc Award.
